It was chilly in most areas of Saskatchewan Sunday morning, particularly in the Western region of the province.

“The coldest temperatures were certainly in the North Battleford and Kindersley area,” said Environment Canada meteorologist Rose Carlsen. “The North Battleford station was reporting a low temperature of -1.9 and the same for Rosetown, also. The other coldest station near there was in Scott where the reported low was -1.7.”

Temperatures were, generally, cooler overnight into Sunday than it was overnight Saturday, but it’s hard to know for sure just how damaging the sub-zero temperatures were. For instance, both Rosetown and Kindersley had four consecutive hours of temperatures either at or below freezing, between 4 and 7 a.m., while North Battleford and Prince Albert had three straight hours of zero or colder readings between 5 and 7 a.m.

“There was below temperatures as far north as Meadow Lake,” explained Carlsen. “Then they kind of went through a corridor through North Battleford and Kindersley and down to Leader. Additionally, not as cold, but still some below (zero) temperatures from Saskatoon through to Regina. The climate site just outside Regina did get down to -0.1 degrees.”

Saskatoon had a +1 degree reading from 4 a.m. through 7 a.m. Sunday.

Following those couple of cool mornings over the weekend, Saskatchewan residents shouldn’t need quite as many layers of clothing going into Monday and Tuesday.

“We have a low that’s going to be developing over Montana and kind of moving through southeastern Saskatchewan, into Manitoba,” said Carlsen. “Associated with that, there’s going to be just a little bit more of a warming trend – not like a warm, warm trend – but warmer temperatures. Additionally, we’re going to be looking at more of an extensive cloud cover overnight (Sunday into Monday) that will help keep those warmer temperatures at the surface to not be so close to zero.”
