Rail Safety Week has led to two Canada-wide arrests being made.

The arrests happened on Tuesday around 3:30 pm when members of the Traffic Unit participating in a project for Rail Safety Week in the area of Avenue W South and 11th Street West in Saskatoon received an automated license plate reader notification for a vehicle with a suspended registered owner.

A traffic stop was done where both passengers were found to not be wearing seatbelts. One passenger attempted to provide a fake name but was later identified. A continued investigation led to the discovery that both passengers were wanted on warrants.

The 27-year-old male passenger was wanted Canada-wide on three counts of Assault, one count for Robbery, and Theft Under $5,000 out of Vancouver and the 23-year-old female passenger was found to be Unlawfully at Large out of Regina and wanted Canada-wide for Breach of Statutory Release.

Officers also located bear spray and a collapsible baton well searching the woman and found several bottles of stolen unopened alcohol in the vehicle.

As a result, both passengers were arrested on their outstanding warrants and issued tickets for failing to wear a seatbelt. The 23-year-old woman was further charged with two counts of Carrying a Concealed Weapon, two counts of Possession of a Weapon Dangerous to Public Peace, Possession of a Prohibited Weapon, and Obstruction. Both were additionally charged with Theft Under $5,000 for the stolen alcohol.

The driver of the vehicle was found not to be the suspended registered owner and was released without charges.

Rail Safety Week was September 21 – 27 and is led by Operation Lifesaver Canada; a national non-profit organization dedicated to preventing incidents at railway crossings and along railway property.
